Reaching the decision to surrender your West Highland White Terrier is never easy.
We understand that life circumstances can change — illness, financial hardship, housing restrictions, behavioral challenges, or family changes can make it impossible to keep a beloved dog.
Our goal is not judgment.
Our goal is to make sure every Westie lands safely in a home where they can thrive.
Westie Rescue Southeast is committed to providing responsible intake, medical care, rehabilitation, and careful placement into permanent homes suited to each dog’s needs.
When Surrender Is Necessary
If surrender is unavoidable, our intake process helps us properly care for your dog.
You will be asked to:
1. Complete a detailed history questionnaire
2. Provide veterinary records
3. Sign a legal transfer of ownership form
4. Arrange safe transport to a WRSE foster home (assistance sometimes available)
This information allows us to:
• Reduce stress for your dog
• Match the right foster home
• Identify medical or behavioral needs quickly
• Prevent future placement failures
Important Policies
• We do not judge or shame owners — honesty helps your dog.
• All known medical and behavioral history must be disclosed.
• Dogs must be safe for handling and transport.
• We cannot guarantee immediate intake due to foster availability.
• Once surrendered, the dog becomes the legal property of Westie Rescue Southeast and will not be returned.
Owner Responsibility
Until physical transfer occurs, the dog remains the owner’s responsibility for:
• Veterinary care
• Safety
• Housing
• Bite liability
WRSE intake begins only when the dog is in our possession and paperwork is completed.
Please begin by completing the surrender request form below.
After submission, a volunteer will contact you to discuss options and next steps.
If your dog is in immediate danger or part of a shelter intake, please mark the form as URGENT.
Our Promise to You
We will treat your Westie with patience, medical care, and compassion.
Our adopters are screened carefully and matched to the individual dog — not first-come, first-served.
